Personality: Headstrong, competitive, and very stubborn, Riku used to be the biggest jerk ever until his trials through the darkness. It seems like he used to strongly believe in Sora's faith that he could do anything; he acted as if he really could do anything, and even went so far as to abandon Sora when he thought Sora could no longer keep up. However, the one thing he's always valued most was friendship -- even while corrupted by darkness, he wanted nothing less than to protect his friends. Indeed, the biggest reason for his plunging into darkness was to save Kairi, and most of his more malicious actions towards Sora were purely out of jealousy.
His time in the darkness has mellowed him out, however, and almost losing his friends scared him more than he'd like to admit. His bullish determination was enough to pull him out of the darkness, but the experience still left him tainted and wracked with guilt. What comes off as pride might actually be his inner anxiety over being replaced -- a jealousy he's always had, now exacerbated by remorse. To that extent, however, he's also become a little more possessive of his friends -- Sora in particular -- and would sooner follow them to the ends of the universe than to risk losing them again.

Abilities:
Dark Aura: Riku can harness the power of darkness to unleash several bursts of energy, similar to fireballs. Fireballs of DARKNESS. Woosh!
Dark Shield: Again using darkness, Riku can create a barrier of force that deflects most attacks both physical and magical. As it is mainly used to protect his friends (read: Sora), he can project it a short distance away from himself if necessary.

History: Riku was best friends with Sora ever since they were little kids. One night when they were but wee lads, some redheaded chick named Kairi appeared on their islands claiming to be from another world. This, along with the fact that this freaky door just appeared out of nowhere in his and Sora's Secret Place, made Riku extremely interested in finding out about other worlds, and he spent most of his adolescence either dreaming of them or cooking up schemes to go to them. However, he also spent his adolescence just being a kid, doing what boys do, playing with his best friend Sora -- and his new friend, Kairi -- and keeping in mind that somewhere out there, there was something he just had to see.
Unfortunately, his and Sora and Kairi's rafting plans were cut short by an invasion of heartless. Tempted by the possibility of finally leaving the island for other worlds, Riku allows himself to be consumed by darkness, as of yet unaware that he was meant to be the chosen keybearer; this responsibility is passed on to Sora in his stead. Separated from his friends, Riku winds up in the custody of Maleficent, who sows seeds of jealousy in Riku's mind in the attempt to lead him further into darkness. While Riku is suspicious of her at first, he accepts the invitation once he learns that Kairi's heart was stolen, and is given the Soul Eater by Maleficent to help him in that regard. Now determined to get Kairi's heart back, he turns into a complete jerk and beats up Pinocchio and Beast and snubs Sora and steals his friends and is just mean; but then Sora whoops his ass and sends him on his way.
Frustrated that he couldn't beat Sora, Riku hears a voice that offers to give him a keyblade of his own and a stronger heart, if only he'll become one with the Darkness. Riku agrees, but ends up being possessed by the voice -- who is actually Xehanort's Heartless!
After Sora is restored, he goes to fight Xehanort's Heartless (in Riku's body) at the End of the World, rolls a 20 on his Defeat The Final Boss check, and defeats the final boss. With his body purged, Riku returns to normal and helps Sora close the Door to Darkness, telling Sora to "take care of Kairi" before locking himself within -- because he still had darkness in his heart and he didn't want to taint the world of the light with it and darkness darkness darkness light light light darkness light yark yark fap fap he was trapped behind the door.
So he wakes up in the lowest basement of Castle Oblivion and finds out that Xehanort's Heartless still wants his body. Which is kind of sexy, except Xehanort's Heartless is totally evil, so King Mickey pops in to help Riku fight against the darkness. Except it wasn't really King Mickey so much as it was a hologram of him projected by King Mickey's will alone, because Mickey's tight like that. So Riku goes through the basement floors and ends up getting molested by Vexen who creates a perfect Replica of him, except the Replica is totally emo and he gets his ass whooped by the real Riku and runs off crying. Riku then goes and beats the crap out of Lexaeus and Zexion and comes out of the
In fighting Zexion, however, he realizes it's time to face the Light, and under the assumption that he's still all Darkness and stuff, he starts to fade or something. But then Naminé shows up and tells him to accept both the Light and the Dark to fight off his fears, and so he does, and so he wins the game, and King Mickey shows up for real. And then DiZ shows up and is all up in Riku's grill, telling him he needs to choose between the Light and the Dark, but Riku's like nigga plz, and decides to follow the path inbetween, calling it the road to dawn.
And then Riku did a bunch of stuff in 358/2 Days, which is totally SPOILERS.
So then he allies with DiZ to help reawaken Sora by kidnapping Roxas and having the two of them reunite. Riku goes to beat up Roxas but gets his ass handed to him on a silver platter, and so he decides to fully immerse himself in darkness to defeat Roxas, thus taking on the appearance of Xehanort's Heartless for some unheavenly reason. Then politics happens and Riku plays a game of pass-the-Naminé with DiZ and Axel, which turns into a game of pass-the-Kairi that Saïx wins. Riku runs all over the different worlds trying to fix the mess that Organization XIII made, running into Sora several times without revealing his identity, until he finally shows up at the World That Never Was and bumrushes Saïx. Saïx falls into a hole and Riku saves Kairi, who figures out that the image of Xehanort's Heartless that she sees is actually Riku, and they go to see Sora together.
Riku finally reunites with Sora after Sora defeats Xigbar, Kairi having revealed his identity and forcing Riku and Sora to hold hands so their inner awesome can connect. Sora breaks down and bawwwws tears of joy over being reunited with his friend, and Riku is totally embarrassed because he didn't want Sora to see him looking like Xehanort's Heartless, but Sora doesn't care because he's awesome, and Riku's awesome, and together they're awesome squared. They proceed to plow through the rest of the castle until they run into Ansem the Wise, who explains a whole bunch of stuff about the plot and then explodes, restoring Riku's body back to normal. Riku rips off his Organization outfit very stylishly -- cloak, pants, AND boots all at once, somehow! -- and shows his bellybutton off to Sora. Little tease.
Sora and Riku then have their showdown with Xemnas, defeating him through the power of friendship and fashion sense, and are both trapped in the Realm of Darkness after winning the battle. Finally having some time alone, they catch up, reconcile, and probably do some other things before Riku finds a message in a bottle sent by Kairi, which inexplicably opens the Door to Light. Sora and Riku reunite with Kairi, Goofy, Donald, and King Mickey, and everyone lived happily ever after until King Mickey sent them a message in a bottle revealing that they were going to star in yet another sequel.
