Despite being a Nobody, Roxas is actually able to experience emotions, and display them as if he were human. Unlike his counterpart, Sora, Roxas has a more aggressive personality. He’s temperamental, and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. In fact, he’s a bit arrogant, reckless, and selfish even. However, his “heart” is pure, and his intentions are usually good. Although he may not always do the right thing, Roxas has always done what he feels is right for himself.

He’s strong-willed and independent, most curious for a Nobody. He’s not innately evil, but he is prone to have darker—maybe even fiercer—expressions when compared to Sora. At times, Roxas can come off as slightly melancholy, and even stoic. A lot less impulsive than Sora, but his lust for life is strong, and he doesn’t take things sitting down.

However, despite all their differences, he, like Sora, holds a deep care for his friends. Not only that, but he had been know to show real joy, laughter, and even kindness. To know that he might be slightly quick to anger, yet still manage to be known be good company, shows real—human—flaws in his design.

Roxas was born in Twilight Town, when Sora sacrificed his own heart in order to free Kairi’s heart. However, thanks to the mix-up that quickly followed, Roxas had no memories of his former self because Kairi’s light quickly returned Sora’s heart to his body. In Twilight Town, Roxas was discovered by Xemnas, and told him that in joining the Organization would help him find the answers that he’s been searching for. Xemnas puts Roxas under the charge of Axel, and they quickly become best friends. However, after Axel was sent to Castle Oblivion, Roxas was placed in charge of Xion. A girl, and the newest member of the Organization. Roxas soon eventually discovers that, she too, is a keyblade wielder. He befriends Xion quickly afterwards, but falls into a deep coma—due to Namine’s suspension of Sora in Castle Oblivion.

After awakening once more, Roxas begins to question how he came to wield the keyblade, and despite wanting to spend time with Axel and Xion, these questions continue to haunt him. While Sora’s memories are slowly being restored, Roxas is slowly feeling the repercussions as well. He grows to question the Organization’s motives, as does Xion, who sets out to find her own answers. Following her example, Roxas soon leaves too, even when Axel tried to persuade him otherwise.

While in Twilight Town, Roxas meets up again with Xion, and finds out that she was an imperfect clone of Sora—created through his leaking memories. She says they cannot co-exist, and that she is here to absorb him in order to become the ‘real’ Sora. Roxas was forced to fight her, however, after the battle Roxas lost all memory of who Xion was—to which she said it was ok. In the end she dies but not before revealing the Organizations true intentions, tell Roxas that he had to stop Xemnas from succeeding. From here, Roxas inherits Xion’s keyblade and his ability to dual-wield.

With the death of Xion, Roxas sets out to find Sora. He, however, makes a stop in the World That Never Was intending to kill Xemnas off for good. On his way to the castle, Roxas is attacked at Memory’s Skyscraper by countless Neoshadows. That was when Riku showed up on the scene, to whom Roxas lent one of his keyblades to. Together they defeated the Neoshadows, but then turn on each other. Roxas defeats Riku the first time, but when he came back as Xehanrot’s Heartless Roxas was the one that is defeated. Roxas was taken to DiZ, in Twilight Town, and DiZ intended to reunite Sora and Roxas, but had to wait for Sora’s memory to be restored fully in order to do so. So, he needed to keep Roxas safe, creating an alternate Twilight Town to hide the boy from the Organization. In this Other Twilight Town, Roxas is able to live as a normal boy, slowly forgetting about Xion and then Axel, too.

However, Roxas’ stay in digital Twilight Town was not meant to last. He seemingly got along with his friends, Hayner, Pence, and Olette, but strange memories haunted him at night. Memories that were not his own. Furthermore, strange things have been happening around town, and Nobodies start to appear—sent my Axel in order to capture, and bring back, Roxas. During one of these encounters with the Dusks, Roxas is presented the Kingdom Key, but is unable to keep it. This was also around the time where he first meets Namine, who seems to have the answers to all his questions. Roxas comes into contact with a dark hooded man, DiZ, and Axel. Axel says that he’s here to take Roxas back, but Roxas cannot remember who Axel is. Glitches start to pop up all over town, like time stopping. When Namie finally reveals to Roxas that he is a Nobody, and should go find Sora in one of his dreams Roxas realizes that he is living in a fake world.

Roxas finds himself going to the old haunted mansion, upon DiZ’s orders, where he meets Namine who tells him about the Organization and that reuniting with Sora will complete him. After finding the secret computer room in the basement Roxas is confronted, in battle, by Axel. After Axel is defeated—thanks to the appearance of Oblivion and Oathkeeper—Roxas enters the pod rooms, seeing Donald and Goofy, and then finally Sora. He then relinquishes his anger and returns to Sora’s body.

Throughout Sora’s journey, Roxas remains resting within. He is mentioned every now and then when Sora is confronted by Organization members—who seem to see Sora and Roxas as interchangeable. But it isn’t until Sora reaches Memory’s Skyscraper in the World That Never Was, where Roxas finally confronts him. They battle, but Roxas quickly realizes that Sora was given the keyblade because of his strong bond with his friends, and that the keyblade would always return to Sora—even if he was defeated. With that, Sora wounds Roxas, who admits his defeat, telling Sora that he “makes a good other.”

Roxas is reunited with Namine, after the defeat of Xenmas, happy that they were able to meet their original selves. It would seem, in the end, Roxas and Namine returned to Destiny Island—along with Sora and Kairi.
